Sasan Abri

Sasan Abri (b. 1984, Tehran, Iran) is an Iranian visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans photography, experimental image-making, video, and installation. His work investigates the relationship between memory, time, urban transformation, and the fragile dialogue between humanity and nature. Through experimental photographic processes—including pinhole photography, Polaroid manipulation, image transfer, and chemical interventions—Abri transforms documentary imagery into poetic visual narratives that blur the boundaries between reality and imagination.

Originally trained through independent study and specialized programs in photography and art criticism at Mah-e-Mehr Institute and Chaharsou-e-Honar Institute in Tehran, Abri developed a distinctive visual language that combines conceptual inquiry with material experimentation. Tehran has remained a central subject throughout his practice, serving both as a physical landscape and as a metaphorical space where personal memory, social history, and environmental change intersect.

Rather than treating photography as a purely documentary medium, Abri embraces its material instability, allowing chance, deterioration, and chemical transformation to become active collaborators in the creation of each image. His works often evoke the impermanence of urban environments while searching for moments of resilience and quiet hope within landscapes undergoing continual change.

Abri’s works have been exhibited internationally and are held in private collections. His practice continues to expand through new explorations of experimental photographic techniques and contemporary image-making, positioning photography as both a conceptual and tactile medium capable of revealing unseen dimensions of memory, place, and perception.
