Omid Bazmandegan

At first encounter, Omid Bazmandegan’s paintings appear to depict the spaces and environments that surround him. Yet, as one spends more time with his work, it gradually becomes clear that these spaces—these trees, houses, figures, and animals—despite their familiarity and proximity to our lived experience, are not simply what they appear to be. They are something more than a tree, a dog, a house, or a figure; or perhaps, in another sense, something less. In his paintings, what we see occupies a space between the real and the subjective experience of it; between what is seen and what exceeds the act of seeing.

His spaces are psychological spaces: places in which the painter situates himself in relation to something, someone, or a feeling. Through his use of light—a device that carries a particularly strong emotional charge in Bazmandegan’s work—these psychological spaces become more fully revealed. In many of his paintings, light and shadow appear alongside one another as forms of presence and absence, as though light recalls something for a fleeting moment while shadow simultaneously signals its absence. This is a relationship to an object that is never entirely lost and never entirely recovered. Melancholy, in his work, is therefore not a resolved sense of loss, but an ongoing and suspended relation between having and not having, seeing and not seeing. Light, consequently, is not merely a means of illuminating objects and spaces; it becomes part of the experience of the image itself. What is illuminated is, precisely through its availability to the gaze, rendered fragile and transient, while what remains in shadow is neither entirely absent nor entirely present.

It is from this point that Bazmandegan’s familiar spaces acquire a dual quality: they remain real, yet seem somehow to have withdrawn from reality. The familiar elements of his paintings appear strangely unfamiliar—not because their form or nature has changed, but because of the relationships established between them, the light, and the surrounding space. A house, a tree, a dog, or a figure is no longer merely the subject of the painting; through its relation to light, silence, and the space around it, its presence acquires a quality that exceeds direct representation. This subtle shift moves the gaze from “what do we see?” toward “how do we see?”—a point at which the subject is no longer simply the subject, and the very act of seeing and feeling becomes part of the experience of painting.
