Artist Biography

Morteza Rajabi, a contemporary painter, was born in 1990 in the village of Govandarreh in Zanjan. He moved first to the city of Zanjan and then to Tehran to study drawing and painting, and after ten years returned to his hometown to continue his artistic practice.  His works are nourished by the rural lifeworld he comes from: insects, livestock, human figures, fields, and orchards become the raw material for creating metamorphic landscapes that, unlike common pastoral approaches, stand at the threshold between belonging and estrangement—between fascination and aversion.  This ontological tension also materializes and intensifies in his experimental combinations of industrial and organic materials, such as shapan (Gel Stain) and handmade walnut ink.
