Mehrdad Jafari

One of the defining features of Mehrdad’s paintings is the presence of characters shaped through a playful, free, and at the same time deeply personal mode of drawing. Despite the apparent simplicity and looseness of the lines, these characters are often caught in difficult situations: at times they appear to be suffering, at times fleeing or terrified, and at others as though they have suddenly grasped something extraordinary.

In his paintings, these characters are not merely figures within an image; each seems to carry something concealed—a secret, an experience, a truth, or a form of knowledge that remains inaccessible to the viewer. It is precisely this distance between the playful, and at times even humorous, appearance of the drawing and the deeply serious, occasionally anxious states of the characters that lends Mehrdad’s works a dual and grotesque quality. Here, the visual innocence of the line becomes intertwined with an agitated or wounded content, evoking in the viewer that moment of the uncanny.

His paintings inhabit a world somewhere between reality and imagination, a world in which the body, fear, suffering, escape, and the discovery of truth become intertwined. As a result, what may initially appear simple and playful gradually acquires a mysterious dimension. It is as though these characters know something about the world that we do not yet know; and rather than explaining this mystery to us, the painting merely places traces of it before our eyes, positioning the viewer not as a passive recipient of meaning, but as a participant—and even a complicit presence—in its construction.
