Laleh Memarardestani (b. 1972 Tehran, Iran) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Tehran. Her practice involves drawing, painting, printmaking and textile art. Her educational background includes a high school diploma and a BFA in Graphic Design (Islamic Azad University of Central Tehran Branch).
She later gained artistic experience in England, specializing in life drawing, printmaking and illustration. The constant practice of drawing has become her personal means of expression. Her work occupies the area between abstraction and reality, where objective forms, on the path to metamorphosis, reach a state of purity. Reserved and simple, they disclose only the essence of their existence. This fluidity, contrasted with stillness and silence, demonstrates the artist’s personal and simplistic expression—organic, lively and meaningful characteristics always present in her art. Memarardestani’s works have been exhibited in Iran and internationally at art fairs and independent galleries, with a part of her oeuvre presented privately at the artist’s studio.
ARTIST REPRESENTATION
Laleh Memarardestani is exclusively represented by

In the works of Laleh Memarardestani, simplicity is less a purely formal choice than a way of approaching things themselves. She does not reduce form in order to turn it into an abstract sign; rather, by gradually eliminating what is superfluous, descriptive, and explanatory, she allows the object to return to its most fundamental quality; that is, the object no longer needs to explain itself through details; its presence is enough.
When I speak of simplicity in Laleh’s work, I do not mean a kind of visual impoverishment or a reduction of the possibilities of the image; on the contrary, this simplicity leads to a kind of emotional richness that, through the removal of determinations, brings the object closer to us. It is as though, in order to see things, we no longer need to look at them from a particular perspective; before the object is placed within the framework of a particular angle, a narrative, or a definition, it reveals itself before us.
Laleh’s stitched drawings remind me of the paintings of Manouchehr Yektai; both seem to have discovered something in the world that, by drawing aside the veils between us and things, makes possible a more immediate encounter with them. In both, this discovery does not occur through explanation or precise representation, but through a process of removing and arriving at that which reveals the truth of an object to us.
This emphasis on simplicity does not mean placing Laleh’s works within the tradition of Minimalism. The issue here is neither the minimization of visual elements nor the reduction of the work to a pure and minimal structure, but rather a kind of seeing before naming; a moment in which the object has not yet been fixed within a specific definition, a familiar narrative, or a predetermined perspective. Rather than simplifying objects, Laleh seems to remove the accumulated determinations imposed upon them, allowing for a more immediate encounter with their presence. In this sense, simplicity in her work is not an absence, but a kind of openness; an openness toward something that, before we know what it is, we can see and feel.
