Artist Biography

Born in Iran in 1983, Janan Nozari lives and works between Tehran and Rasht, Iran.

In her mixed-media practice, she examines photographs, installation, painting, but mainly embroidery and considers the fabric as the core of her exploration.

Her imagery is inspired by women’s lives, bodies, and the feminine impulse to nurture. Furthermore, themes surrounding sexual relations, identity, history, and the essence of feminism are continually explored within her work. Elements like undergarments, stockings, and tights evoke a complex emotional dialogue in her practice. The advent of stockings and tights was an essential part of the liberation of women’s bodies. Undergarments have long inspired a “complex emotional dialogue” in art, touching on erotic desire, fashion, feminism, gender, and racial politics. Even though she is deeply inspired by Iranian artistic roots and particularly interested in Persian miniatures, she looks at the contemporary world through the vernacularized lens of modern art. She participated in more than ten duo and group exhibitions in Iran, France, Dubai, and Kuwait.
