AmirMahdy Zahedy

I ask myself whether this playful gaze at everything in Amirmahdy Zahedy’s works, from the body and suffering to historical narratives and even concepts such as love, stems from a certain lightness toward the world, or from an attempt to make the burden of existence more bearable.

What makes this playfulness more interesting is that, even when it appears effortless, simple, or childlike on the surface, it does not come from indifference; there is a certain precision to it: a precision that allows familiar things to occupy a different place and acquire a different meaning. In Zahedy’s works, the body, suffering, and even the figure of the victim do not necessarily remain in the familiar place where we expect them to be; everyday objects and elements enter the image, are played with, and sometimes take the place of something that had previously seemed heavy, distant, or inaccessible.

This is why the artistic playfulness in these works is less a way of taking the world lightly than a way of moving closer to it. An ordinary object can take the place of a wound, a childlike element can appear alongside an image of suffering, and something that we would normally approach with caution and distance can suddenly enter the realm of touch and everyday experience.

In these displacements, what is heavy is neither denied nor necessarily stripped of its sacredness; its distance from us simply becomes smaller, without losing its weight. It is as though, rather than diminishing the weight of existence, Amirmahdy Zahedy finds another way of carrying it: through play, through displacement, through bringing the everyday into a place where we do not expect it to be. This playful tone in his works comes from precisely this: not from taking the world lightly, but from finding a way to move closer to things that, in their usual form, are too heavy, distant, or inaccessible.
