Artist Biography

Ghazaal Zare is an Iranian artist born in 1978, whose roots stretch across many parts of Iran. She currently lives and works between Tehran and Yazd. Her academic path is diverse and richly layered: she studied Cellular Biology at Shahid Beheshti University, Graphic Design at the University of Art, Painting at Azad University, earned a Diploma in Philosophy from the Center for Philosophers, and completed her Master’s degree in Visual Arts at Al-Zahra University. This wide range of studies has shaped a multifaceted and deeply human artistic perspective. Ghazal is also active in curatorial work and art research.

Her early experiences during the turbulent years of the Iran–Iraq War (1980–1988) have had a lasting impact on her worldview. The anxiety of the cities, people seeking shelter, and the scarcity of basic resources taught her the meaning of survival, displacement, and creativity. From childhood, she learned to build her own world from fragments—scraps of paper, found images, small objects, and scattered memories. This practice later became a foundation of her visual language. Even today, her artistic concerns continue to grow out of lived experience and the realities of contemporary society.

Ghazal’s current work reflects a contemporary look at fashion, economics, and popular culture, and examines how these forces shape everyday life. Alongside her artistic practice, she volunteers with orphans and the elderly in Tehran and Yazd. Through sharing authentic stories from Iranian society, she seeks to create a meaningful bridge between image, memory, and lived reality—a bridge that is human, empathetic, and honest.
